Hitting fashion week doesn’t mean you have to travel to Paris, Milan or even New York City. It is all right in downtown Rochester, under a huge tent. That’s a new venue this year. The organizers for this year’s Fashion Week wanted to consolidate so people wouldn’t have to leave the room to enjoy the shows and fashions. There will still be a boutique crawl at around 20 different stores in town. The show gets bigger each year, and organizers have added a runway show this year.
Models will wear designer clothes from our area and all over the world. Nita Brown owns a shop on Park Avenue, but all of her designs are made in Ghana.
Andreas Gomez and his brother own Hard Tec World Jewelry out of Miami. Their designs are all made from repurposed materials. Not only are the bracelets and watches environmentally-friendly – the designers also give back with each item they sell. They grew up in Columbia, South America, and each time they sell jewelry, they return there and plant a tree for children there. They also teach them English and the importance of being good to the environment. Though it is a fashion-filled week, it isn’t all about designer clothes and runway shows. All the money raised goes to the Center for Youth Services. It pays for two shelters for young men and services for babies at Crisis Nursery on Genesee Street.
