Welcome to Threadlines, our monthly blog dedicated to celebrating and spotlighting the passionate supporters who inspire our brand.
In this month of Love and Black History, I want to spotlight someone who truly embodies the essence of a modern Renaissance man—Gino Williams. A mathematician, foodie, food critic, photographer, community activist, and global traveler extraordinaire, Gino is also a devoted mentor who played a role in raising his two nieces and nephew. Through it all, he exudes effortless style and vibes to his own tune.
I was introduced to Gino by a fellow Columbia University mate when Kodak recruited me to Rochester two decades ago. Our mutual friend assured me that knowing Gino would make my transition into the community seamless and fun. But by the time we connected, he had already relocated to Chicago to work as a physicist for Argonne National Laboratory. Distance didn’t stop our friendship from flourishing. We bonded over books, travel, and, of course, fashion. Ever the artist, Gino has a great love for photography, spending countless hours capturing the essence of Chicago’s architecture and cityscape. His work is nothing short of stunning!
A true connoisseur, Gino is also a freelance food critic (with accolades from the Chicago Tribune, among others). As a very engaged home chef, he has started gardening to employ more fresh ingredients in his cooking. On any given weekend, you will find him whipping up an exquisite meal inspired by his global palate—be it Jamaican, Ghanaian, Moroccan, Senegalese, Thai, or Indian. His love for diverse and authentic flavors is only rivaled by his enthusiasm for travel. Like me, Gino has explored North America, Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and Australia extensively. He is now using food as an avenue for delving more into culture.
But what I admire most about Gino is his dedication to family. He played a pivotal role in raising his twin nephew and niece — who were toddlers when he moved to Chicago — and a niece who was in the second grade. He was a constant for them through their formative years through high school, and has become “Uncle Doc” to their children. He instilled in them a sense of self, a love for learning, financial responsibility, culture, and the arts. From getting them their first library cards to setting up savings accounts and exposing them to theater, dance, music, museums, and the world, he ensured they would be comfortable in any setting.
Professionally, Gino now works in IT, running mathematical models for a major financial firm in Chicago. Despite his demanding career, he remains committed to his love for fashion. During his university days and early 20’s, Gino graced the runway as a model, showcasing his innate style and presence. His appreciation for fashion extends to his long-standing support of Mansawear and Fashion Week Rochester. He has attended several shows over the years and proudly joined the celebration of Mansawear's 10th Anniversary in 2024, right here in Rochester.
Here’s to Gino, a Renaissance man indeed! He truly embodies the spirit of a Renaissance man, seamlessly blending intellectual pursuits, artistic passions, a love for culture, and a dedication to family. Mansawear is honored to have Gino as an Ambassador and a dedicated fan.
